A Habistax Case Study with Adam7FishTanks
After seven years in the hobby and two stints working inside the aquarium industry, Adam knows what a well-built planted tank looks like. He also knows the shortcuts people take to get there and why most of them fall short.
When he decided to build a riparium-style aquarium inside a WIO 60 Shallow, he wanted something cleaner. More intentional. A layout that looked considered rather than assembled.
That is when he tried Habistax.
The Tank
Aquarium: WIO 60 Shallow, 45 litres
Style: Riparium-style aquascape with planting extending above the waterline
Plants: Anubias and Cryptocoryne species from the Habistax recommended plant pack
The shallow footprint of the WIO 60 is ideal for aquascaping, but it also creates a challenge. With less vertical water column to work with, layouts can easily feel flat. Creating genuine height without overcrowding the tank takes more than good plant selection.

Adam needed a method, not just materials.
The Problem With Traditional Approaches
Most planted layouts are built the same way. Plants go into substrate or get fixed to rocks and wood. The layout is set, and from that point, it largely stays the same.
For experienced aquarists, the limitations of this approach are familiar.
Maintenance becomes disruptive. Moving hardscape to clean the tank means disturbing the layout you spent time building. Achieving real vertical structure depends heavily on the size and shape of rocks or driftwood rather than intentional plant placement.
And DIY solutions, hanging planters and improvised towers often look exactly like what they are.
“Traditional formats are often static. Habistax offers unique placements you just cannot get elsewhere. It is a refined, purpose-built solution that is significantly more intentional and professional than DIY hang-on hacks.”
Building With Habistax
Rather than placing everything at the base of the tank, Adam used Habistax to create structured planting zones at different heights throughout the aquarium.
Instead of using a single tower, he separated the structure into two planted islands, creating a layout that stretched naturally across the shallow tank.
Sticks were integrated into the towers, and pebbles were scattered around the base to blend the structure naturally into the surrounding hardscape.
The result was a tiered landscape that felt deliberate rather than decorated.
“It created a natural, tiered landscape that flows perfectly across the shallow tank.”
Because the tower can be broken into sections, Adam could tailor the height specifically to the dimensions of the WIO 60 Shallow.
“Being able to break the segments down meant I could tailor the height specifically to my tank. That kind of flexibility is not something you get with traditional methods.”
Why Habistax Worked in This Setup
The modular design gave Adam complete control over height, structure and layout placement without relying on oversized hardscape or fixed planting areas.
For shallow tanks especially, this created a more balanced layout while keeping the aquarium easy to maintain.
Habistax also worked particularly well within a riparium style setup because it allowed planting to extend naturally throughout different levels of the tank without overcrowding the scape.
The system allowed Adam to create a layout that would have been difficult to achieve using traditional planting methods alone.

Create Height and Structure in Your Aquarium
Habistax helps you:
✔ create vertical planting zones
✔ build layered layouts
✔ position plants at different heights
✔ simplify maintenance and adjustments
What It Changed
Height and Structure
Creating height inside the tank became much easier with Habistax.
Plants that would normally be restricted to the lower areas of the aquarium could now be positioned significantly higher, creating a more layered and visually balanced layout.
“It allows you to take plants usually restricted to the bottom of the tank and place them much higher. The difference in how the layout reads is immediate.”
Maintenance Without Compromise
Another thing Adam noticed quickly was how much easier maintenance became.
Because the tower lifts cleanly out of the tank, deep cleaning no longer means dismantling the entire scape.
The layout stays intact while maintenance becomes far less disruptive.
“If you need to deep clean, you simply lift the tower up and put it back. You are not ruining your scape every time the tank needs attention.”
Plant Growth and Water Stability
The plants established quickly and remained healthy throughout the setup.
“My water quality remained very stable, and the plant growth has been lush and healthy. The nutrient supply from inside the tower gives plants everything they need.”
Who It Works For
Adam is clear that Habistax is not just for beginners.
For newer hobbyists, it removes much of the complexity from plant placement and eliminates the need for glue, fishing line or improvised solutions. It creates a cleaner and more structured result without requiring advanced aquascaping experience.
For experienced aquarists, the value comes from flexibility and workflow.
“After seven years in the hobby, I appreciate products that simplify the workflow while looking high-end. Habistax does both.”
It also created natural shelter and territory for fish and shrimp throughout the tank.
