Struggling to Add Depth to Your Aquarium?

Like many hobbyists, Kai struggled to create height and structure in his planted aquarium. After introducing Habistax into his 100-litre tank, he transformed both how the layout looked and how it functioned.

Meet Kai:

Kai is a hobbyist fishkeeper based in Brighton, UK. He grew up around his grandad’s ponds and a beautiful collection of koi carp and started his own aquarium journey in August 2025. Since then, he has focused on building a planted tank that feels balanced, natural, and visually interesting.

The Setup

Kai introduced Habistax into a 100-litre community tank with a jungle-style planted layout.

Fish and invertebrates:

  • Endler guppies

  • Fire red Neocaridina shrimp colony

  • Ramshorn snails

  • Blue eyed lemon bristlenose pleco

Plants:

  • 2 large Anubias barteri

  • 3 smaller Anubias nana

  • 2 Amazon swords at the base

The Challenge

Like many hobbyists new to aquascaping, Kai found it difficult to create height and depth within the tank. Most traditional setups kept plants at the base or attached to rocks and wood, leaving a flat appearance from the front and empty areas that lacked structure. The right side of his aquarium was a particular problem.

“I always struggled to create more upwards depth in my tank.”

Before vs After Using Habistax

Before

After

Plants restricted to the base or hardscape

Plants positioned at multiple heights

Limited height and flat appearance from the front

Improved depth and visual layering

Empty areas lacking structure

Balanced, structured layout across the tank

Uniform layout with little flexibility

More flexibility and creativity in design

The Solution: Adding Vertical Structure with Habistax

Kai introduced a Habistax tower to create a defined planting area within the tank. Instead of placing plants only at the base, he was able to position them at different heights. He also adjusted the angle slightly to create a more natural look within the aquascape.

“The Habistax tower gave me the ability to place plants much higher than usual very easily.”

Create Depth Without Rebuilding Your Tank

Habistax helps you plant higher in the aquarium, creates structured planting zones, improves layout balance, and reduces the need for constant repositioning.

The Results

1. Increased Depth and Layout Balance

The Habistax tower filled an empty area of the tank and added a new dimension to the layout. The ability to plant higher created a more layered and visually interesting aquascape.

“It was the piece my tank always lacked.”

2. Greater Flexibility in Plant Placement

Instead of relying on substrate or hardscape, Kai could position plants freely throughout the tank, creating a more dynamic layout compared to traditional setups.

“It allows plants to be positioned at different heights, which changes how the tank is structured and viewed.”

3. Improved Tank Stability

The raised planting area provides a large surface for beneficial bacteria, and because it sits higher than standard substrate, water can flow through the structure more effectively. The plants also contribute by helping to filter the water.

“It creates a lot of surface area for beneficial bacteria and essentially works as a natural filter with the water flow going through the gravel.”

4. Easier Maintenance

With plants positioned higher in the tank, maintenance became easier and less disruptive. Kai notes that working around the tower is slightly different to a standard setup, requiring some mindfulness around flow and access, but the overall experience was a clear improvement.

“It meant I didn’t have to get my arms in the tank as much, which made things a lot easier.”

How It Compares to Traditional Setups

Traditional planted tanks rely on substrate planting or attaching plants to wood or rock. Habistax offers a different approach by creating structured planting zones, allowing vertical planting and improving layout flexibility throughout the tank.

“Traditional setups are more uniform. Habistax creates a more layered look.”

Who Is Habistax Best For?

Kai believes Habistax works for both beginners and experienced aquarists. For someone new to the hobby, it removes the usual barriers of substrate, glue, wood and stone, making it straightforward to get started with a planted tank without overcomplicating things. For experienced keepers, it offers a genuinely different way to design layouts, with more flexibility and room for creativity than traditional methods allow.

Would He Use It Again?

Most definitely. Kai already has another tower and an extra base plate ready for his next build. He is planning a Lord of the Rings inspired setup using both towers, a two towers concept that shows just how much the product has captured his imagination.

“Most definitely. I have another tower and extra base plate ready for a new tank down the line.”

Final Thoughts

Kai found Habistax to be both practical and rewarding to use, especially as someone still developing his aquascaping skills.

“It offers a simple but flexible way to set up a tank while still allowing for creativity.”

In one sentence:

“It’s a beautiful modular planting tower that turns your tank into something way more unique.”

How to Reduce Maintenance in a Planted Aquarium

Planted aquariums are popular for good reason. They create a natural, visually rich environment that few other setups can match. But many hobbyists discover, often sooner than expected, that keeping a planted tank looking its best takes real effort.
